Surabaya – The Sapu Angin Car 4 from the Mechanical Engineering Department of the  ITS Surabaya that won the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia in Malaysia on 7-9 July would arrive at ITS Surabaya on July 14th.

On Monday, The Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the ITS, Prof. Herman Sasongko, said that the rector together with the civitas academica and the colleagues from Indonesian Navy would welcome the Team of Sapu Angin Car 4.

In the “Shell Eco-Marathon” (SEM) Asia in Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia, on 7-9 July, the Sapu Angin Car 4 recorded an efficiency value of about 150 kmpl (Kilometer per liter).

Here is the information conveyed by Prof. Herman Sasongko that is reported to the Rector of ITS Surabaya, Prof. Triyogi Yuwono :

First,Sapu Angin Car 4 beat seven other teams competing in the class;

Second,for the same category the Sapu Angin Car 3 grabbed third position with an  

    efficiency value of about 113 kmpl;

Third, for this category, the ITS Team became the defending Champion, because last

 year it placed the Sapu Angin Car 2 as the most economical car.   

The ITS Team’s victory was more complete after being designated as the winner in the “alternative diesel fuel urban concept” class for using FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) fuel or known as biodiesel. Biodiesel was used because it is environmentally friendly.

This year, the ITS sends three cars : Sapu Angin 3, 4, and 5 to participate in the competition. They are: first, Sapu Angin Car 3 with a 200cc-diesel engine, second, Sapu Angin Car 4 with a 100cc-diesel engine, and third, Sapu Angin Car 5 with a 90cc- 4-stroke engine.

The engine of Sapu Angin Car 5 was an invention of ITS’s students that was named Paijo Experiment (PEX) 90 and used a control system invented by the students with the name IQUTECH-E  or ‘ikiutekke’ (this is the brain).

As a result, Sapu Angin Car 5 was placed 8^th in Asia and 1^st in Indonesia in the prototype class of gasoline-fueled car.

SEM is an event of innovation, imagination, and creation held to invent future vehicles  that are economical, able to go through the farthest distance, and environmentally friendly.  

SEM has been held since 1985 in France, then Shell held this event in America in 2007 and in Asia in 2010 with Malaysia as the host for three years and for the next events it will be held in other Asian countries.
